20.2 Skill Building for Tunables (Solings & J-24s)
Designed for sailors who have a Medium Air Rating/Ensign Endorsement and want to strengthen and expand their skills on performance boats like Solings and J-24s. This class will focus on narrow points of sail‚ sail trim‚ on-the-water changes‚ weight adjustments‚ heel control‚ cross sheeting‚ roll tacking and teamwork. By experimenting with the tools of trim and balance‚ including the traveler‚ outhaul‚ Cunningham‚ vang‚ and backstay‚ the students experience “power” and tuning firsthand‚ learning to sense when the boat is over- and under-powered and pilot the boat at its most balanced‚ efficient‚ and safest speeds and angles for long periods. Classes will meet once a week for three weeks with required practice between sessions.
Proficiency in skills at this level is required for a new MCSC Medium Air Rating/Tunables Endorsement.
Prerequisites: 20‚ 10.1‚ 10.2 or equivalent‚ a Medium Air Rating/Ensign Endorsement and a Light Air Rating/Tunables Endorsement and pre-assessment.
