10.3 Master Skills for Daysailors (Ensigns)

Designed for sailors with a Medium Air rating (or equivalent experience) who are actively practicing sailing and want to sail in more challenging conditions while gaining the skills that underpin self-reliance. This course introduces risk factors and responses and will focus on crew roles and safety‚ reefing‚ heaving to‚ teamwork‚ shared strengths‚ crisis management‚ problem solving‚ jury rigging‚ shorthanded sailing and an early introduction to Volunteer Instructor training. For most of the class‚ students will break into teams to problem-solve‚ practice complex maneuvers like backwinding‚ reefing in difficult conditions‚ manage sea-state and steering without a tiller. The goal is for students to leave this course with the confidence to manage heavy weather and changing conditions and in getting the boat and crew back to the dock safely and without outside support. Classes will meet once a week for three weeks with required practice between sessions.

While current holders of Heavy Ratings with Ensign Endorsements are not required to participate‚ this course introduces sailing skills and methods previously not taught on these boats‚ so it is highly recommended for returning Heavy Air Ensign sailors and Medium Air Ensign sailors seeking to move to complex conditions.

Mastering the skills at this level is required for a new MCSC Heavy Air Rating/Ensign Endorsement.

Prerequisites: 10.1‚ 10.2 or equivalent‚ a Medium Rating‚ and pre-assessment.
