Prams in the Park (Age 8-11)
MCSC’s “Prams in the Park” program introduces sailing and water safety to children in the Discovery World lagoon.
In Prams Level 1‚ students learn basic sailing concepts including rigging‚ boarding‚ steering‚ sailing to and from the dock‚ tacking and jibing (words for turning a boat)‚ trimming the sail‚ and key safety skills like wearing a lifejacket and recovering from a capsize. Students also learn the basic rules-of-the-road in sailing - a framework of cooperation and courtesy that has application in other parts of life. Prams Level 1 students share a boat with a friend and learn through games and fun cooperative exercises.
In Prams Level 2‚ students sail their own boat and learn more advanced skills‚ like sailing closer to the wind‚ sailing with a tiller extension‚ using "hiking straps"‚ and shifting their body in the boat to improve performance and increase the fun. Like sailing in general‚ which is unpredictable‚ Prams Level 2 students can expect to repeat this course -- learning new things each time.
Seasoned Prams sailors can choose Prams Level 2R to spend the first of almost two weeks learning and practicing basic racing skills in a nine-day expeditionary class that will include starting and sailing a race‚ sailing upwind and downwind‚ rounding marks and applying sailing’s "rules-of-the-road" in sailboat racing. Then‚ along with their instructors as guides‚ the class travels to and compete in a local regatta‚ sets up race ready Opti sailboats‚ races two days (weather permitting)‚ and then de-rigs and returns to debrief and celebrate.
Our “Prams in the Park” program began in 1985 and has received numerous accolades for introducing children to sailing and water safety.
Prams Level 1 and 2 courses are half-day‚ Monday through Friday‚ with morning and afternoon options. Prams Level 2R is a nine day experience. Students are required to have passed a 25-yard swim check in order to participate.
Need-based scholarships are available.
For the Prams STEM option‚ please visit the Discovery World website for our partnership in their "Learn to Sail" camps.
The 2024 course schedule will be published in January‚ 2024. Look for it here.
