Adult Sailing Instruction

8.) Centerboards and Asymmetrical Spinnakers

New in 2023‚ this Advanced Centerboard class will be taught primarily on MCSC’s fleet of RS Toura sailboats. The RS Toura is a large cockpit centerboard boat carrying a reefable mainsail‚ a furling jib and an asymmetrical spinnaker launched on a sprit. The platform teaches crew cooperation‚ powering and depowering‚ hiking using hiking straps‚ capsize-recovery‚ and downwind sailing on reaching angles (sometimes called VMG sailing‚ for Velocity Made Good).

Prerequisites: Students must have a Light Air Rating and a Centerboard Endorsement to take this class. And each student must own and wear their own 4mm wetsuit and booties and be prepared to swim for extended periods while learning to right a capsized boat. Many online retailers offer suitable wetsuits ranging from $60-200.

This is an "Experience Fleet" class. No ratings or endorsements will be issued.
